Digitally Transforming Michael George Manufacturing with BrookConsult
The Challenge
Michael George Manufacturing [MGM] initially approached BrookConsult for help securing capital funding to purchase new factory equipment. However, during a visit to the business, it became clear their challenges ran much deeper.
They were struggling with:
– Inefficient, non-value-adding processes.
– A reliance on a server-based SAGE system that was no longer fit for purpose.
– A lack of integration across finance, ordering, stock, and production processes.
– Outdated manual systems for managing stock and taking orders at exhibitions.
MGM knew they needed to move away from their current system, but replacing SAGE without a clear plan could have caused more issues than it solved.
The Solution
Andrew spent half a day with MGM’s owners, Brian and Ruth, listening to their challenges and identifying the root causes.
Together, they created a strategy to tackle the business’s short, medium, and long-term needs:
1. Short-Term Fixes: Moving away from the server-based system to a cloud-based ERP solution, which streamlines processes and reduces their reliance on paper.
2. Medium-Term Improvements: Automating key processes like stock management and customer orders. This replaces reactive, manual methods with a system that integrates seamlessly with production and finance.
3. Long-Term Development: Delivering Lean and Continuous Improvement training through BrookConsult’s Click2Learn partnership, alongside a digital transformation strategy as part of the Made Smarter programme.
The aims of this project are:
– Streamlined Processes: The new ERP system eliminates time-consuming manual tasks, such as stock forecasting and order management, particularly during exhibitions.
– Improved Efficiency: Automated workflows now link customer orders, production schedules, and finance systems, saving time and reducing errors.
– Digital Transformation: A clear digital strategy is guiding MGM through their transition to a fully integrated, tech-enabled operation.
– Upskilled Team: Training is being provided to both staff and senior leaders, ensuring the entire workforce can adapt to and benefit from the changes.
– Funding Secured: Andrew coordinated multiple funding applications, handling the complexities to ensure the business could implement these improvements without unnecessary stress.
Next Steps
The new cloud-based systems are on track to be fully operational by early next year, with training and strategy support continuing well into 2025. The long-term plan will include further capital investments and embedding the latest digital technologies into MGM’s factory operations.
Why It Worked
Andrew’s approach focused on understanding MGM’s unique challenges and tailoring solutions that addressed their needs in three key areas: process, technology, and organisation.
By providing a holistic solution rather than a quick fix, BrookConsult are helping MGM build a solid foundation for future growth.
Client Feedback
Brian and Ruth appreciated the way the project was managed and the wraparound support they received. While dealing with multiple funding streams required some extra paperwork, Andrew’s efforts ensured a smooth process.
The transformation is already making a noticeable difference, and they’re excited about what’s next.
BrookConsult’s practical, hands-on approach has helped MGM make real progress, setting them up to thrive in a digital future.
